About foodvixen

Lover of pork crackle, Negroni aficionado and advocate of sustainably caught Australian seafood. My dream is to travel the world and eat everything my little heart desires but then I realise I’m too short to look stylish in stretchy pants and I still have a full time job. Born and bred in Cairns, I truly love Far North Queensland and its unique food culture.

I started my blog Foodvixen back in 2011 after reading about a food blogger that lives in Perth. At the time I had many a friend and family member asking me where to dine in Cairns because I dined out so often. Not long after I got myself a WordPress page and taught myself to use it (sort of). In the last 6 or so years I have amassed a fantastic following of like minded local foodies. Whether it be through my website, Instagram or Facebook page, Foodvixen is my way of sharing the food attitudes, practices, hidden gems and local institutions of our region with the rest of the world.

This is my blog… Enjoy!

  1. Cool blog – I really enjoyed reading about your foodie experinces! Found while trying to locate a email address for Frame Espresso.
By the way I work at industry One Coffee on Scott St and we are hosting a social latte art competition this Friday (9 Dec) at 6pm if you are keen.
    Cheers Ali

    • Hi Ali, unfortuately I am out of town until late Friday night so I won’t be able to make it otherwise I would have loved to come along! They do have very good latte art at Frame Espresso though! Next time for sure πŸ™‚

    • Hi Ali! I’m the shared Turkey foccacia and banana bread duo on Fridays!

  2. Hi Foodvixen,

It’s refreshing to see someone reviewing Cairns’ restaurants with more than a star rating system πŸ™‚ Your reviews have decided dinner for tonight! Keep it up ^_^

  3. Where is La Porchetta Restaurant in your list!! best Pizza in town!! have you been there?….. I Love it

    • Well I will definitely have to check it out. I have heard a few people say its quite good. The last pizza I got was from Pizza Capers and I have to say it was good but it wasn’t that good. I do remember having a Joseppe’s pizza a few years ago and it was damn good! Will give La Porchetta a try and let u know. Thanks Edwin πŸ™‚

  4. Morning foodvixen …

great blog much appreciate the info and views you give ….

    I love …
    Dolce & Caffe
1 Shield Street | Mantra Esplanade,

This place has the best coffee in town I think. The food is tasty and the service is friendly. Great healthy choices on the menu for breakfast and lunch. This place is always buzzing with customers .

I am a regular now and love showing off this place to friends and family who come to visit cairns

Would love you to have a look for your self if you have not already commented on Dolca

keep up the great work foodvixen

    regards…

    Peter

    • Hi Peter thanks for the positive feedback. I really enjoy reading people’s comments and responses to my blog. I have been to Dolce and Cafe once or twice for breakfast and lunch and I do think it’s a great cafe. I know it has a big following with the locals and must admit I have meant to do a post on it but got a little swamped. I’ll get there eventually and put pen to paper to let you know what I think. Thanks for reading πŸ™‚

  5. Hi Foodvixen

Just wanted to say I look forward to reading your reviews. I like trying different places for lunch so I often check where you’ve been lately for ideas!

Thanks and keep up the good work.

  6. I am so happy to find your blog! The Cairns scene needs someone like you. Terrific!

  7. great very helpful while in cairns with family thanks for putting the time into it

  8. I came across your blog looking for a new Cafe, can I say Congratulations… Honestly living in Cairns for most of my life, nothing gives me more dissatisfaction then the customer service when frequenting local restaurants and cafes… Thank you for your honesty and for your feedback… Well done

    • Thanks Leanne πŸ™‚ it’s nice to get some feedback from people that read my blog! I try to be as honest as I can with my dining experiences in Cairns, even if it does mean I step on a few toes in the process. There are some really dodgy places to eat at in and around town while there are also some really good ones as well.

  9. Wow… its about time… thank you for your blogs… are always looking for somewhere new and interesting to dine… you have listed alot of my favourite restaurants here also… πŸ™‚ Well done – keep it up πŸ™‚

  10. Amazing and helpful blog! Me and partner are extremely judgmental food snobs lol we should live in Sydney or something we just really appreciate good food and service! Love reading ur blog. X

    • Thanks Brooke! I do also consider myself to be somewhat of a food snob but there is really nothing wrong with an appreciation for good food and service… Especially in a town so reliant on good hospitality πŸ™‚ Any places you can recommend? πŸ˜‰

  11. Beaut blog, just found you today! So good to see thoughtfully written and HONEST restaurant reviews for FNQ. The Hat Person and I are Thursday night regulars at El Mundo, and fully agree with your comments. The aforementioned HP has promised me a birthday dinner at Tamarind – any chance in the next week or two? Otherwise it will be NuNu, after reading your review… BTW, HP and I are carrying out a detailed and extensive survey on local mojitos. The Bayleaf continues to hold a commanding lead..

PS be interested to hear your view on Bellocale..

    • Hi Plonkoclock thank you for your kind words about my blog. Glad you find it informative πŸ™‚ I doubt I will be able to get to Tamarind in the next week or two since I am away for work ATM but I have only read good things about it on Trip Advisor. Still that really means stuff all considering that Fetta’s received an award. I can definitely recommend NuNu’s for your birthday dinner. You won’t be disappointed unless you forget to make an booking. As for Bellocale I haven’t dined there since October last year which is not long after they opened. The food was okay then but nothing amazing. Since then I have heard mixed reviews. A friend went there recently and said her risotto was flavorless. I will have to get back one day soon and try it out again.

  12. love your work mate, straight up and real! Next time your in Port Douglas go and bask in beach atmosphere of (The surf club)……i wont say too much more, but try it out

    • Thank you very much Xavier πŸ™‚ It’s nice to know that I all my hard work and eating is appreciated πŸ˜› I will definitely check it out! Thanks for the tip πŸ™‚

  13. Ng Kin Wah is threatening that he may not see the end of 2014. Thanks Foodvixen for your comments about one of Cairns’ older Chinese takeaways. After reaching his 70th birthday this month, dad is finally getting used to the idea that it might be his last year (est. in the early 1970’s). Thought I better tell you in case you wanted one last Lemon Chicken – he has a habit of closing doors for prolonged periods over Summer and keeping the locals guessing as to whether he will open them again. Thanks for your Blog, I’ll pass your remarks onto the chef.

  14. …who are you really foodvixen

  15. I’ve seen fv just once.. she is everything you could wish for.. except available!

  16. Hi Food Vixen, Do you have any recommendations for an awesome Indian meal for Diwali in Cairns?

  17. Anthony Krebbekx
